Repairing and Replacing Locks and Lock Sets...

Repairing a lock is usually a simple task as long as the person performing the operation has spare parts.  The most common damage to locks is simple usage - each time a key is put into the lock, it has the potential to introduce dirt, pocket lint, and other foreign matter into the workings of the lock.  In this case, the lock typically has to be taken completely apart and each piece cleaned then put back together with proper lubricant.

Replacing a lock can happen for several reasons including that the lock is beyond being repaired.  More often, it is done to upgrade to a better lock or handle set.

Kwikset brand and similar varieties available at most home improvement stores are generally considered the worst locks.  They are made of soft metals and plastics and generally do not include quality mechanical design.  They do not have a lasting finish, they do not feature very strong keying systems, and they are the easiest to bypass by picking or drilling.

Schlage branded locksets available at home improvement stores is generally considered above average - particularly in the quality of the finish and internal components.

A qualified locksmith can provide commercial quality hardware even for homeowners and anyone concerned with the safety and security of whatever it is they are locking up should consider replacing their locks with commercial grade hardware.

A locksmith also has access to customized hardware that fits unique themes or is custom made to the customers’ specifications and styling.
