“Key Bumping”

What you need to know...

“Key Bumping” is the process of putting a specially made key into a lock and rapping it with a hammer causing the lock to open almost immediately.  Most residential and commercial locks are vulnerable to this attack including Kwikset, Schlage, Weslock, Defiant, Kwikset Maximum Security, Kwikset Titan, Masterlock, and Weiser.

The “Key Bumping” technique has been around for a very long time but until recently was only known among locksmiths and a very small number of thieves.  Because of recent attention in the news and on The Internet, every common burglar, neighbor, PI, child, etc., is aware of the technique.

Key bumping requires almost no skill - all it requires is a key cut or filed to the right shape and something to use to rap against it such as a hammer or piece of wood.  A bumped lock will give no indication to investigators how the lock was opened.

How to protect yourself and your property...

Replace at least one lock on each door with a high-security lockset.  Pyrran offers several options that not only prevent Key Bumping but also picking, drilling, and forcing or smashing.  We also offer additional hardware used in concert with high security locks to significantly reduce the ability for someone to kick your door in or pry it open.

Properly assessed and installed, these locks can replace all of your common locks around your home or business including padlocks, desk drawers, gun safe locks, filing cabinet locks, and any other lock that might protect your valuables.  They can be keyed to match or master keyed between all the locks including padlocks and desk locks depending on the system.

Each of these high-security locking choices can be ordered with geographically specific and “controlled” keys so they cannot be duplicated without your permission - they are simply not available to home centers and common key duplicating centers.  In the most secure arrangements, even other locksmiths cannot duplicate the key.  You never again need to worry about an employee, serviceman, family member, or car mechanic making a copy without your permission.

One of the most secure, the Schlage Primus System, has keys that also fit standard Schlage locks so you can mix high-security and low-security and still only carry one key.  Another system utilizes an electronic key about the size of an automotive keyfob - this system includes very impressive access controls based on date, time, and user and keeps a record of the last thousand events in both the lock and the key for later analysis.
